SUMMARY OF RESTORATION We bought our 1950 Airfloat Landyacht 24(28 ft LOA) in 29 Palms, California in the fall of 2014. We originally went to look at a Kenskill trailer as a potential project for us to restore, but we instead spied a very sad looking Airfloat Trailer off in the weeds under a tree. After spending an hour or so getting her out and taking a closer look, we determined her very worthy of our restoration ambitions. It should have been a warning to us that we had to wrap her in entirely with a tow strap to hold her together for the trip back home to Phoenix, but we were determined. It wasn't until we got back to Phoenix and started removing some of the damaged corrugated siding, that we realized our "remodel" was going to become a complete "tear-down & rebuild". Mold, termites, rat droppings and dry rot were everywhere. And so began our 9 year journey of bringing this relatively rare and spectacular trailer back to life. We totally dismantled the entire trailer, saving all of the exterior corrugated aluminum, appliances, cabinetry, windows, ceiling/roof vents & light fixtures, etc. Once we got down to the frame, we realized that it too was in need of remedial repairs. The rear 4 ft or so of the trailer was sagging, due to there only being minimal wood framing to support this area. Thus, the frame was extended & strengthened by welding 4 feet of new frame, added to the rear of the axel box. Once the frame was de-rusted & restored, it was coated with POR to retard rust. New races and bearings were installed. The original brakes worked perfectly, so were left intact. The slimp wheel hitch was rebuilt, as well as installing new galvanized wheel wells on the trailer. Then new sheet metal was installed on top of the frame, followed by 2x6 supports, insulation and capped with ¾" T & G plywood. The body was then framed up using 2x3 studs, templates were created using the original siding panels to fabricate new ¼" plywood siding for the entire body of the trailer. All original windows were dismantled, cleaned, re-painted and fitted with new glass & rubber gaskets. Prior to adding the new siding, the entire body was covered with Tyvek HouseWrap material. We were able to locate and install the exact correct profile new corrugated aluminum panels on the sides & front of the trailer; installed a rolled solid 1-piece 35 ft. new aluminum roof which spanned the front half of the trailer, over the entire roof and then down the entire rear end. The smooth aluminum side panels above the corrugated panels were restored or replaced as needed, then painted with a very "custom" red paint. All exterior fasteners are stainless steel, the new flat & corner edge trim moldings are aluminum. All original porch lights, door grab handles, running lights and rear bumpers were restored and installed. Most of the taillight assemblies were restorable, except for the lenses. Ironically, the only exact matching lens matched up to a 1932 DeSoto car! The original California license plate, as well as a new
A Historical Arizona license plate was installed. The trailer is titled and registered in Arizona, with current tags. All electrical was replaced and updated (high & low voltage), as well as the addition of an outside, roll out battery compartment for two batteries; all plumbing was replaced and updated, including new sinks, faucets, shower valves, toilet and the addition of fresh (35 gal), grey & black water tanks (6 gal). Air conditioning and heat have been added, supplied by a Coleman Mach 8-13.5 BTU ceiling-mounted low profile unit. A Suburban 6 gal direct vent water heater was installed. Due to the over-all increased weight of new cabinetry, extended frame work & enhanced framing, etc., we removed the existing axle and had a new 7,000 Ibs axle fabricated and installed. New propane tanks (2) installed on the front platform of the slimp wheel struts. On the interior, new birch cabinets were fabricated using the original cabinets as patterns. All walls have been rebuilt in birch and are fully insulated, as well as the original "Airfloat" ventilation system has been maintained. The original ceiling was raised by 4" in the restoration process. The "wet" bathroom is fabricated from stainless steel panels, with integrated shower pan, shower, flush toilet and an enclosed vanity with integrated sink. The original stove, refrigerator and stove hood/vent have been reconditioned. New marmoleum flooring has been professionally installed. Fold-out couches (futons) in both the front and rear provide sleeping for four persons. Original sconces & 2 ceiling fixtures, plus a bath vanity light bar and a reading light over the fold-out table, provide excellent lighting with LED lamps to conserve battery power. A wine cabinet, microwave, USB ports and a TV have been added as a nod to modernization.Trailer Make: Airfloat Trailer Year: 1950 Trailer Model: Landyacht 24 Trailer Serial No: 2501001 Scottsdale, AZ 85255
